What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide (the same active, FDA-approved ingredient in Ozempic®) is used primarily for managing type 2 diabetes, but has been used for promoting weight loss. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which means it mimics the action of a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. Semaglutide works by increasing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon release, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting a feeling of fullness or satiety.

In addition to diabetes management, semaglutide has been approved for weight loss (Wegovy®) in certain patients, making it a popular choice for those seeking to achieve their weight loss goals. Semaglutide is a once-weekly injection medication that can be easily self-administered.
Who should NOT take semaglutide?
These cannot be prescribed to individuals with the following conditions:
-
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
-
Severe gastrointestinal diseases (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction)
-
Diabetic gastroparesis
-
History of pancreatitis
-
Caution in patients with a high risk of pancreatitis (e.g., gallstones, excessive alcohol use, hypertriglyceridemia)
-
History of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 2
-
Caution in cases of kidney disease
